The Rooms Review

An eye-catching feature of the cityscape since 2005, this lively space celebrating the arts and cultures of Newfoundland and Labrador has a design inspired by traditional "fishing rooms," shacks by the waterside where fishing families would process their catch. Exhibits in the Connections Gallery, the Husky Energy Gallery, and the Elinor Gill Ratcliffe Gallery explore the region's cultural heritage, while the Provincial Art Gallery presents contemporary and older works from the permanent art collection and mounts temporary art exhibitions. Displays at the Provincial Archives include historical photos and documents. The Rooms hosts many family-oriented activities—summer events for children include art and crafts, Inuit games, nature projects, and creative workshops. The facility's observation deck has awe-inspiring views over St. John's. The fourth-floor Rooms Café serves tasty seafood dishes; on Wednesday nights it's open for dinner and is a great place to watch the sun set or the fog creep in over the city.
