Bacalao Review

The four rooms of this old house in St. John's have been converted into cozy dining rooms, all with fireplaces. Bacalao, pronounced "back-allow," is salt cod, a staple for Newfoundlanders and the Mediterraneans who came to fish here, and a variation of it is featured every night. Other nouvelle-Newfoundland options include moose and caribou dishes, and mussels in Quidi Vidi Iceberg beer. Everything, including desserts, is prepared from scratch, using local ingredients wherever possible. Even the washroom soap is locally made. In addition to global wines, you can also sample local vintages here, among them the distinctive Lady of the Woods, made from birch sap.
