Until recently, eating out in Newfoundland was all about cod. Today, Newfoundland cuisine fuses tradition, a fierce locavore movement focused on taking full advantage of the diverse bounty of ocean, bluff, bog, and pasture, and serious talent. The culinary scene in St. John’s is a bounty and a treat. Towns outside St. John's might lack its concentration of excellent dining options, but talented chefs live and work beyond the capital, many of them committed to using fresh, local, and organic ingredients. Some unique dining experiences unfold as well, like the Great Viking Feast, staged by Lightkeepers Seafood Restaurant in St. Anthony, at which diners tuck into moose stew in a sod hut.
Unlike elsewhere in Atlantic Canada, you'll find moose meat on restaurant menus here. It’s very lean, very tasty, somewhat similar to beef, and certainly worth ordering if you get the chance.
Arguably the best restaurant in Canada today and one of the best in the world, Raymonds features classic Continental cuisine reimagined with local ingredients and upgraded to the acme of perfection. The dining room is elegant and grand, with chandeliers overhead and city lights reflecting off the harbor through massive windows. For a more intimate evening, look into the bar which serves the same menu but in a softer, almost vintage, setting.
95 Water St., St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Every evening, the set menu at the Twine Loft proves to be one of the region's best meals. Relax into a true fine dining experience complete with an on-site sommelier. The deck overlooking the water is also available without reservation for happy hour drinks every day from 3 pm to 5 pm. Dietary restrictions are accommodated, but require advanced notice and discussion.
57 High St., Trinity, Newfoundland and Labrador, A0C 2S0, Canada
Good seafood and solid Canadian fare are served in this former lighthouse-keeper's home on a parkland site overlooking the ocean. Book the raucous Great Viking Feast dinner theater, where you can enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet amid table-pounding, cheers, and laughter as actors perform a typical example of a Viking court of law.
21 Fishing Point Rd., St. Anthony, Newfoundland and Labrador, A0K 4S0, Canada
Exposed stone walls, original paintings, and chic furnishings make for a serene (if dark) dining atmosphere in this restored heritage building right downtown. With two different menus (one for dinner, one for the bar) and a wine bar upstairs, this restaurant covers it all: the short but classic dinner menu features steak, seafood, lamb, and poultry while the bar menu displays some international influences. There's a lengthy international wine list with a decent selection available by the glass in addition to many cocktails.
329 Duckworth St., St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, A1C 1H3, Canada
This hidden gem may be Newfoundland's best-kept secret. The four-course fine dining experience takes reservations months ahead, with meal pre-order placed a week in advance. Meals are prepared in the French style and incorporate elements of traditional Newfoundland cooking, using locally sourced ingredients where possible. For guests making a long drive for the evening, rooms are available for overnight stays.
20 Trinity Dr., Clarenville, Newfoundland and Labrador, A5A 0L5, Canada
The Sheraton Hotel's main restaurant remains popular with out-of-town guests and an older crowd who know to appreciate on-site parking, quiet, and a classic menu in this increasingly loud and crowded downtown. Friendly, unobtrusive service distracts neither from the views nor the expertly prepared cuisine. In addition to lunch and dinner, an excellent hot and cold breakfast buffet is laid out until 1 pm daily.
115 Cavendish Sq., St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, A1C 3K2, Canada
The short but enticing menu here reflects the kitchen's expert touch and dedication to the concepts of sustainable farming and incorporating local ingredients. The fish dishes are always high -quality, but you'll have to wait to see what the local fishers bring in to know exactly what you're going to get. Arrive before the sun goes down to enjoy the stunning view over Bonne Bay. Desserts range from beautifully light to naughtily rich.
7 Beach Rd., Norris Point, Newfoundland and Labrador, A0K 3V0, Canada
