St. Andrews by-the-Sea
St. Andrews by-the-Sea, a designated National Historic District on Passamaquoddy Bay, is one of North America's prettiest resort towns. It has long been a summer retreat of the affluent, and mansions ring the town. Of the town's 550 buildings, 280 were erected before 1880, and 14 of those have survived from the 1700s. Some Loyalists even brought their homes with them piece by piece from Castine, Maine, across the bay, when the American Revolution didn't go their way. Pick up a walking-tour map at the visitor information center and follow it through the pleasant streets. Water Street, by the harbor, has eateries, gift and crafts shops, and artists' studios.
