Each summer the grassy parade square of the Old Fort comes alive with the crackle of colonial muskets and the skirl of bagpipes. The French are represented by the Compagnie Franche de la Marine and the British by the kilted 78th Fraser Highlanders, one of the regiments that participated in the conquest of Québec in 1759. The two companies of colonial soldiers raise the flag every day at 11 AM, practice maneuvers at 1 PM, put on a combined display of precision drilling and musket fire at 3 PM, and lower the flag at 4:30 PM. Children are encouraged to take part. The fort itself, built between 1820 and 1824 to protect Montréal from an American invasion that never came, is now a museum that tells the story of colonial life in the city through displays of old firearms, maps, and uniforms.
