St. Boniface Cathedral

St. Boniface Cathedral Review

The largest French community in western Canada was founded as Fort Rouge in 1738 and became an important fur-trading outpost for the North West Company. Upon the arrival of Roman Catholic priests, the settlement was renamed St. Boniface. Remnants of a 1908 basilica that survived a 1968 fire can be seen outside the perimeter of the present cathedral, built in 1972. The grave of Louis Riel, the St. Boniface native son who led the Métis rebellion, is in the churchyard.
