Chives Canadian Bistro

$$-$$$, Eclectic, Halifax

User Rating: *** 3.4

Fodor's Review:

The two chef-owners are wizards at defining eclectic Canadian cuisine, with a few French, German, and Asian influences thrown in for good measure. The large, casual restaurant with planked-wood floors and cozy lighting also offers an intimate table for four in their wine "vault" (the restaurant used to be a bank). The menu adapts to what's fresh and seasonal at the fishmongers and the farmers' market but customers would have a fit if two key items -- the Nova Scotia lamb shank and the bacon-wrapped port tenderloin -- weren't available. Ditto for the crème brûlée.

Overrated and Over Priced

Posted by eddo from Saskatoon on 8/29/07

The food was alright, but not amazing, and certainly not worth the price. We had heard that it was excellent, and even tried their famous dish, the lamb, but like I said it was only alright, and way over priced. Save your money and eat somewhere else. If you want a fancier meal, Sweet Basil has similar prices but much better food.

Staffing Problems

Posted by Bob from Canada on 6/13/06

Due to the staff and their eye for perfection within the kitchen out of site of the 2 Owners, Chives was the best place to be in Halifax. However due to the treatment of Key Staff members and the recent loss of Sous Chef Jason Durling the establishment has suffered.
