Quw'utsun' Cultural and Conference Centre
Quw'utsun' Cultural and Conference Centre Review
This village of cedar longhouses, occupying 6 acres of shady riverbank, is one of Canada's leading First Nations cultural and educational facilities. A 20-minute video in a longhouse-style theater introduces the history of the Cowichan people, B.C.'s largest aboriginal group, and a 30-minute walking tour reveals the legends behind the site's dozen totem poles. Crafts demonstrations and dance performances are occasionally offered during summer, and the many indigenous plants on-site are labeled with information about their traditional uses. The gift shop stocks, among other things, the hand-knit Cowichan sweaters that the area is known for, and the Riverwalk Café offers a rare opportunity to sample First Nations fare.
