Hatley Park National Historic Site

Hatley Park National Historic Site Review

Envisioned by James Dunsmuir, a former premier of British Columbia and son of the man who built Craigdarroch Castle, this ivy-draped 40-room manor and its 565 acres of oceanfront grounds make up one of the finest intact Edwardian estates in Canada. Started in 1908 and built in just 18 months, the manor mixes Norman and Renaissance styles, which are meant to suggest a house that had stood for centuries. It's now part of Royal Roads University, and the interior of the castle can be seen only by guided tour. The tours are informative, although almost none of the original furnishings—except a billiard table that was too big to remove—remain. You don't need to join a tour to see the beautifully preserved Italian, Japanese, and English rose gardens. To get here, take Highway 1A west from Victoria. Royal Roads University is on your left about half a mile past the turnoff to Fort Rodd Hill.
