Victoria and Vancouver Island Travel Guide

Golf

You can golf year-round in Victoria and southern Vancouver Island, and you almost have to just to try all the courses. Victoria alone has several public golf courses, ranging from rolling sea-view fairways to challenging mountaintop sites. Southern Vancouver Island is home to the Vancouver Island Golf Trail, where you'll find 10 championship courses.

Arbutus Ridge Golf Club. Mountain and ocean views from the course and the clubhouse are the draws at this challenging par-71 course, 40 minutes north of Victoria in the Cowichan Valley. 3515 Telegraph Rd., Cobble Hill, BC, V0R 1L4. 250/743–5000. www.arbutusridgegolf.com. 18 holes. 6193 yds. Par 71. Green Fee: C$54/C$59.

Bear Mountain Golf & Country Club. Built near the top of a 1,100-foot mountain about 20 minutes north of Victoria, this is widely regarded as the island's most exciting course. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and his son Steve, the Mountain Course has an extra 19th hole built on a cliff ledge with striking views across the city. A second Nicklaus-designed layout, called the Valley Course, is at a slightly lower elevation. 1999 Country Club Way, off Millstream Rd. and Bear Mountain Pkwy., West Shore, Victoria, BC, V9B 6R3. 250/744–2327 or 888/533–2327. www.bearmountain.ca. Mountain Course: 18 holes. 7212 yds. Par 72. Green Fee: C$129. Valley Course: 18 holes. 7000 yds. Par 71. Green Fee: C$129.

Golf Vancouver Island. This organization has details about the island's courses. 675 Jones Terrace, Victoria, BC, V8Z 2L6. 888/465–3239. www.golfvancouverisland.ca.

Olympic View Golf Club. The distant peaks of the Olympic Mountains are the backdrop to this bucolic par-72 course, home to two waterfalls and 12 lakes. The first B.C. course played by Tiger Woods, it's about 30 minutes' drive west of downtown Victoria. 643 Latoria Rd., off Veterans' Memorial Parkway, West Shore, Victoria, BC, V9C 3A3. 250/474–3673 or 800/446–5322. www.olympicviewgolf.com. 18 holes. 6534 yds.
