Apartment Rentals

The trend toward self-catered apartments for families or business executives has only increased in recent years. Vancouver has a number of hotels that offer lower rates or separate wings for longer-term residents. Options often include housekeeping, parking, satellite TV, or Wi-Fi access. Make Yourself at Home (604/874-7817 www.makeyourselfathome.com) provides a terrific range of private homes and apartments for short-term rentals; this site is especially good for last-minute bookings. On the higher end of the spectrum, Dream Rentals (www.vancouverdreamrentals.com) lists many luxury condominiums and executive homes.

Complimentary Transportation

Some properties have complimentary bicycles, others extend free limo services to the theater or pickups when you've shopped yourself silly. That can be extremely handy, depending on your priorities and your location.

Extra Costs

Most hotels let children under 18 stay free in their parents' room, though you may be charged extra for more than two adults. Parking runs about C$25 to C$40 per day at downtown hotels, and can be free outside the downtown core. Watch out for phone and Internet charges, which can add up. You'll also be charged a 10% accommodations tax and a 5% Goods and Services Tax (GST).
