Wreck Beach

Fodor's Review:

Canada's largest clothing-optional beach is reached via a steep trail and flight of stairs from Gate 6, off Marine Drive on the University of British Columbia campus. This 6-km-long (4-mi-long) wildernesslike beach, managed by a team of volunteers, has a delightfully anarchic culture of its own. The driftwood is tangled, bathing suits aren't required, and you can buy a wild array of food, goods, and services: vendors sell pizza, homemade sandwiches, buffalo burgers, and Mexican specialties. They peddle fresh fruit, juices, and alcoholic drinks. You can get a pedicure or massage, or have your hair cut. And there's jewelry, sarongs, and other hippie-inspired beachwear for sale. Up to 14,000 people might visit on a summer weekend. There are no lifeguards.
