At Vancouver's most innovative Indian restaurant, genial proprietor Vikram Vij and his wife Meeru Dhalwala use local ingredients to create exciting takes on South Asian cuisine. Dishes such as lamb "popsicles" in a creamy curry, spot prawns served with a wheat berry pilaf, or roasted eggplant and butternut squash with black chickpeas are far from traditional but are beautifully executed. Mr. Vij circulates through the room, which is decorated with Indian antiques and whimsical elephant-pattern lanterns, greeting guests and suggesting dishes or cocktail pairings. Expect to cool your heels at the bar sipping a cold beer while you wait up to an hour for a table, but if you like creative Indian fare, it's worth it.

    Lived up to expectations

    I planned a special evening a Vij's with my wife and son. We arrived at five PM and settled down to wait for the 5.30 opening along with 40 or so other diners. AS the restaurant opened we were all shown to tables and immediately there was a vibrant atmosphere in the room. The wait staff do a really good job and we never felt rushed.
    I don't have a lot of experience with Indian food and we shared three dishes. All tasted amazing. I will plan to return.
