Granville Island is one of Vancouver's more entertaining neighborhoods, but unless you've moored up in a houseboat, the only overnight option is the Granville Island Hotel. The exterior of this offbeat water's-edge building is part Mission style, part industrial: the result is modern and sophisticated. Inside, most guest rooms have water views through full-length windows, which get a bit grimy when the sea breezes kick up dust from the construction of the Olympic Village nearby. Rooms on the top floor (the third) have small balconies; the corridor in the east wing has a quirky view: it overlooks vats brewing away for the fashionable brewpub and restaurant downstairs. The Penthouse isn't worth the extra expense. Pros: Unique island location, creek views, boat transit to interesting disembarkation points. Cons: Construction activity in the morning; island gets crazy busy, especially on weekends.

We had too high of expectations for this hotel. The penthouse suite was worn out and shabby. The carpet dingy. The furniture stained. The bed uncomfortable. The floor to ceiling windows surprising dirty. I will say the view is nice, but not enough of a view to warrant the price. The lights on the deck can't be turned off so the bedroom is bright even at night ("Sorry" the front desk said). When the Jacuzzi tub spewed yellow water (several times), the maintenance people and the front desk said it was "normal." We also stayed in the regular room and found it more comfortable, cleaner, more everything than the penthouse suite. The location is nice and maybe worth the price of the regular room, but don't spend extra $$$ on the penthouse suite. It was no less than a disappointment and I regret staying there.
