Chambar Review

A smartly dressed crowd hangs out at the bar of this hip Belgian eatery sipping imported beer or funky cocktails like the Blue Fig (gin infused with oven-roasted figs and served with a side of Stilton cheese). But the high-ceiling room is not just a pretty (and prettily populated) space. Classic Belgian dishes are reinvented with flavors from North Africa and beyond. The moules are justifiably popular, either steamed in white wine or sauced with exotic smoked chilies, cilantro, and coconut cream. Butternut squash gnocchi might be paired with elk meatballs, while arctic char could be served with sautéed rapini and quinoa tabouleh. Unusual, perhaps, but definitely delicious.

Café Medina. For casual breakfast and lunch fare, from omelets to merguez sausages to a daily curry creation, try this café next door to its sister restaurant, Chambar. Belgian waffles—with toppings like dark chocolate or raspberry caramel—are the specialty. 556 Beatty St., V6B 2L3. 604/879–3114. No dinner.
