Chambar

Chambar Review

A smartly dressed crowd hangs out at the bar of this hip Belgian eatery sipping imported beer or funky cocktails, such as the Poire Moroccan (tequila, Poire William, and spice-infused white grape juice shaken with egg whites). But the high-ceiling room is not just a pretty (and prettily populated) space. Classic Belgian dishes are reinvented with flavors from North Africa and beyond. The moules are justifiably popular, either steamed in white wine or sauced with exotic smoked chilies, cilantro, and coconut cream. Grilled octopus might be paired with fried chickpeas, cauliflower, and arugula, while venison could be served in a sauce of coronation grapes. Unusual, perhaps. Definitely delicious.

For more casual breakfast and lunch fare, from omelets to merguez sausages to a daily noodle creation, try sibling Café Medina next door; Belgian waffles are their specialty. 556 Beatty St., V6B 2L3. 604/879-3114. www.medinacafe.com/. No dinner.
