Chinese Freemasons Building

Chinese Freemasons Building Review

Two completely different facades distinguish this structure on the northwest corner of Pender and Carrall streets. The side facing Pender represents a fine example of Cantonese recessed balconies. The Carrall Street side displays the standard Victorian style common throughout the British Empire. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen hid in this building for months from agents of the Manchu Dynasty while he raised funds for its overthrow, which he accomplished in 1911.
