This park on the western flanks of the Selkirks has smaller mountains than those in the Rockies to the east, and lusher vegetation, thanks to the additional rain and snow on the west-facing slopes. Conceived primarily as a day-use park, Mt. Revelstoke National Park covers just 260 square km (100 square mi). Its main attraction is the 26-km (16-mi) Meadows in the Sky Parkway to the summit of Mt. Revelstoke, at 6,395 feet. As it climbs to the top, the parkway takes you through several different geographical zones, from alpine meadows to tundra. The paved road, which is generally open and snow-free from mid-July to late September, begins from Highway 1, 1½ km (1 mi) before the turnoff to the town of Revelstoke. This is a narrow road with many switchbacks, so trailers are not permitted. From the Balsam Lake parking lot, there's a free shuttle bus for the last 2 km (1 mi) to the summit area daily from 10 to 4:20. Several easy hikes from the Balsam parking lot meander past small lakes and have excellent views of the Selkirk and Monashee ranges.
