Canadian Rocky Mountain cuisine focuses on sustainably grown, regionally sourced ingredients. Look for beef, lamb, pheasant, venison, elk, bison, and trout from Alberta, and salmon from British Columbia. In addition to places serving local cuisine, Jasper also has Greek, Italian, Japanese, French, Indian, and Mexican restaurants.
Just outside the Jasper National Park gates, this gourmet farm-to-table restaurant is a hidden gem with wonderful mountain views. The menu changes often, but the food is always made from locally sourced, seasonal ingredients (try the bison burger) and everything, including the desserts, is prepared fresh on-site; there's also about two dozen beer choices including an extensive locally made craft beer list and a fun cocktail and martini menu. The restaurant received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence several years running and the carefully curated wine list features over 300 well-priced wines---some served by the glass and some by the bottle. There are two seatings for dinner---one between 5 and 6 pm and a second after 7:30 pm.
This second-floor restaurant in downtown Jasper has an open kitchen, a terrace, and plenty of windows with lovely mountain views. The decor isn't fancy, but the food is excellent, featuring crispy calamari, beef carpaccio, baked meatballs, and house-made pasta dishes served alongside beef, salmon, lamb, and duck entrees. There's a nice selection of wines by the glass or bottle, cocktails, and domestic and imported beers on the drinks menu.
This cozy downtown bakery is a great stop for a breakfast of tasty muffins and other confections or a lunch of sandwiches and wraps. Freshly baked cookies, cakes, and artisanal breads are also available, along with a wide variety of coffees and teas. Popular with locals and visitors, this place with just a few tables for dining inside can be packed during peak times. The owners also run the Other Paw, two blocks away.
This café is a great place to enjoy coffee, tea, or ice cream, grab-and-go breakfasts, fine chocolates, or baked goods before or after a hike. There's also a variety of hot and cold sandwiches, pizza, hamburgers, stew, burgers, fries, and poutine. They even micro-roast organic fairly traded coffee beans in small batches, and you can have local beer or BC wine with your meal if you dine inside. There are picnic tables if you wish to dine outside and enjoy the magnificent scenery.
A funky atmosphere and an "evil"-inspired menu make this Jasper restaurant a fun place to dine. Local favorites among the globally inspired, locally sourced entrées include the Malevolent Meatloaf (Alberta bison wrapped in wild boar bacon), Nefarious Chicken (fried chicken with chili bourbon maple sauce, served on a toasted waffle), and the gluten-free El Diablo Bowl (marinated free-range chicken, chipotle sauce, jasmine rice, corn salsa, black beans, and corn tortilla sticks). There's always a chef's cut steak special as well as a seafood feature, and the Cowboy sushi made with grilled beef tenderloin is a fun appetizer. Save room for WTF dessert---fried banana spring rolls with chocolate and caramel sauce.
Fire-roasted Neapolitan-style pizzas made in a real bell oven are the specialty at this small pizzeria in the upper level of a downtown building. Although you seat yourself and order over a counter, servers bring the food and drinks to your table. The pizzas range from a classic margherita to interesting combinations like cavoletti (brussels sprouts, prosciutto crisps, Gorgonzola cheese, dates, and walnuts) or prosciutto with arugula. Enjoy a gelato for dessert.
This pine-finished, second-floor dining room has great views of the railway station, downtown Jasper, and the mountains. The Canadian seafood, wild game, and Alberta beef dishes are classic and delicious, and daily specials are noted on a chalkboard menu. This is a good place to sample halibut or lobster from Atlantic Canada or enjoy Alberta game meats like elk or bison. The wine list includes some noteworthy Canadian wines.
The park's only brewery is a fine stop for a beer and a burger, though the menu also features wings, poutine, nachos, fish-and-chips, and other pub fare in addition to well-made salads, steaks, and seafood dishes. Premium hops and natural mountain water go into the six signature beers brewed on site. You can watch sports action on the big screens near the bar or dine in the restaurant.
The views are amazing from the newly renovated rooftop patio of this popular downtown Jasper restaurant. Pizza from the wood-fired and traditional pizza ovens is the star attraction here, but you'll also find burgers, pastas, salads, and a broad selection of appetizers. The dessert menu is pretty much non-existent, but it's easy to forgive when you taste the pizza. The King of New York wood-fired pizza is so authentic, you'll want to fold your slice before eating it. The restaurant has three beers on tap, a good selection of craft beer, cocktails, spirits, and wine.
With wooden walls and ceilings, this small 28-seat restaurant has a cozy, homey feel. There isn't a lot of selection on the menu, but it's innovative and very well done like elk tartare, wagyu meatballs, and the coffee-braised bison short ribs; breakfast ranges from french-style omelettes to buttermilk pancakes with a blueberry compote. The veggie and pasta dishes should not be overlooked and there are options for kids. There's also a nice selection of coffees, teas, craft beers, cocktails, and wine to accompany meals, and if you're staying at the resort, the Kumama canteen has everything you'll need to stock your kitchen.
This cafeteria-style café located just off Maligne Lake is a great spot to get a picnic to go or to relax and eat in. The regionally sourced menu has a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, soup, chili, hot dogs, and three different kinds of poutine, a Canadian indulgence made with potato wedges, cheese curds, and gravy. There's also a small children's menu.
As it's right beside the Maligne Canyon trailhead, this restaurant is a convenient stop before or after a hike. There's a nice cocktail and craft beer menu, and you can relax on the patio around one of the gas-fire tables before or after dinner. Smoked meats are the specialty here: brisket, pulled pork, venison sausage, or chicken are served with mac-n-cheese, baked beans, garlic-Parmesan fries, or grilled vegetables. Try the wilderness platter, which has a sampling of four different smoked meats with four sides. It's big enough for two people, and it's a great value.
This is slow food at its best, with just one chef and one server and patrons sitting either at tables along the perimeter or at the small bar, watching the sushi as it's prepared à la minute. Tatsuhiko Okazaki, the owner and chef, is famous for fashioning tantalizing combinations from the freshest ingredients. Try the Jasper Roll, made with crab meat and shrimp and served with a spicy sauce. Sapporo beer and sake complement chef Okaki's creations perfectly. Only about a dozen people can fit in this sushi bar at once. Reservations—only possible for the earliest seatings, at 6 and 6:30—should be made well in advance.
Get a taste of northern Italy while enjoying one of the best views in the Canadian Rockies; on warm evenings, you can dine on the heated patio while enjoying the vistas of Lac Beauvert, Mount Edith Cavell, and Whistlers Mountain. All the pastas are house-made, and the produce is locally sourced. The menu features shellfish from Atlantic Canada; steelhead trout from British Columbia; and Alberta beef, chicken and lamb. There are also good vegetarian and gluten-free options. Be sure to save room for tiramisu for dessert. Children age five and under eat for free; those 12 and under can order from a special menu or, for half price, the regular menu.
Near the top of Whistlers Mountain, spectacular views and casual dining are the big draws at this restaurant that is operated by the Jasper Skytram. It's a good spot for breakfast, lunch, or possibly an early dinner---depending on the season---as casual Canadian-style sandwiches, burgers, wraps, soups, and salads are served with beer, wine, coolers and soft drinks.
If you want a taste of Australian café culture, this is the place, with six types of coffee, a variety of organic teas, kombucha, and healthy smoothies. The food menu includes breakfast sandwiches and bowls, sausage rolls, apple-cider loaf, and other nibbles. The view is lovely from the sunny second-floor terrace.
At this intimate, 15-table, downtown dining room, chef Jason Munn's menus change regularly but always feature entrees made with fresh Alberta bison, Angus beef, and British Columbian seafood and creative sides like hand-made potato gnocchi or white-cheddar poutine. The restaurant's name is inspired by the Syrah (Shiraz) grape varietal, so you'll find a nice selection of wines (as well as craft beers) to pair with your meal. The menu also has many gluten-free options—and at least one vegetarian entree nightly—and everything is made in house, from the biscuits and infused butter that start the meal to the desserts that finish it. On that note, save room for the wonderful white-chocolate goat-cheese cake. Reservations are essential, but there is bar seating if you just want just a glass of wine or a light meal.
Beautiful views of Pyramid Lake and Pyramid Mountain are complimented by a menu of gourmet comfort food with a Canadian twist. Breakfast options include brioche French Toast with a haskap berry compote and maple syrup, while dinner offers a five-course carnivore tasting menu or a five-course vegetarian tasting menu; you can also order à la carte from the dinner menu. Other dinner specialties include duck breast with sweet potato fondant or Rocky Mountain Trout with roasted fennel.
This intimate dining space combines delicious with nutritious, using regionally sourced seafood, beef, pork, and game to create Mediterranean-fusion fare. Consider the seafood pot, with ingredients simmered in a broth made with tomatoes, coconut, and kaffir lime and served over sweet-potato noodles with Asian vegetables; just save room for the delicious chocolate-pecan tart (surprise . . . it's vegan and gluten-free!). Creative cocktails are served at the large wooden bar, where there's also a nice selection of wines by the glass.
This aptly named restaurant has an enormous glass-enclosed patio overlooking Maligne Lake, the largest lake in Jasper National Park. Locally sourced gourmet cuisine like the Alberta beef burger or the soy-marinated bison short ribs complement the breathtaking views; save room for the Banoffee tart. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free menu items are clearly marked and there's a reasonably priced kids menu. Meals are complimented with a good selection of local craft beers, craft cocktails, and Canadian wines. You can also purchase packages that include the Maligne Lake cruise.
