Fodor's Review

Inspired by the natural surroundings of Prince's Island Park, on Bow River, this restaurant has the look of a fishing lodge. The exquisite regional Canadian cuisine includes Northwest Territories caribou, British Columbia oysters and Pacific salmon, Alberta Black Angus beef, and Alberta lamb. The wine list has earned Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence since 1997. With 24-hours advance notice, the restaurant can prepare you a picnic basket to enjoy in the park.

Wonderful Canadian fare in a unique setting

The food here is really well done -- top notch gourmet Canadian fare such a fish and game. The setting on Prince's Island Park just a short walk across the river from downtown is amazing, too, and sometime overshadows the food. The atmosphere is uscale but casual (you probably wouldn't feel out of line in a suit or in jeans). It is getting moderatly pricey, but still a reasonable value for the wonderful quality.

Great view doesn't make up for only OK food

$300 dinner for two people and the food was only OK. Service was average and our waiter certainly didn't go out of his way. After hearing so much about this restaurant we were not thrilled.

Not as good as expected

Having heard this was the best restaurant in Calgary, I was naturally eager to try it (6/27/03). Very good service could not make up for the average food. The risotto was dreadful, the pheasant was okay and the rhubarb strudel was quite good. The waiter offered an excellent wine choice. Overall a nice location, but the atmosphere was definitely better than the food.

Lifetime Highlight by Frequent Travelers

New Year's Eve 2002 was outstanding. Six course dinner with wine pairings. Beautiful, elegant fishing lodge type building and decor. Ask for a table in the main room with the big river rock fireplace and huge glass windows. Located in a park on an island in the Bow River, which runs through downtown Calgary. Just a short walk across a bridge through the park to the restaurant. Wonderful atmosphere. Exceptional food. Very good service. Very memorable

experience. We enjoyed taking the train in from the our suburban hotel and the several block walk through the attractive downtown skyscrapers to the island restaurant. When you are on the island if you walk east from the restaurant you can see the beautiful downtown skyline and city lights across the river. Take a camera! Thank you Assistant Manager Andy C. for your exta special service!

A vacation in the city

Elegant yet rustic- one of the most beautiful setting for a restaurant I have ever enjoyed, in the quiet of Prince's Island Park only steps from the heart of downtown. Menu is "rocky mountain regional," but more creative and genteel than steaks. Great variety of "grilled flatbreads" (interesting and delicious pizzas- good value), great desserts, and completely non-smoking!
