JANUARY
Ice Magic. On winter weekends, starting with the third Friday in January, ice carvers from around the world gather for this annual competition held at various locations in Lake Louise. Banff-Lake Louise Winter Festival. Winter sports are the highlight of this festival, which also features outdoor events, nightly bar activities, and a town party. It begins on the third Friday in January and runs for 10 days. 403/762-8421. www.banfflakelouise.com.
JUNE-AUGUST
Banff Summer Arts Festival. Every summer the Banff Centre presents film screenings, visual-art displays, theater, opera, dance, and musical productions. 403/762-6300. www.banffcentre.ca/bsaf.
JULY
Canada Day. This holiday means free admission to the national park, as well as big celebrations in Canmore and Banff that include parades, fireworks, and live music. 403/762-0285.
NOVEMBER-DECEMBER
Christmas in the Rockies and Santa Claus Parade. Banff welcomes the holiday season with a one-day event featuring photos with that jolly old elf in Central Park, craft shows, and an evening parade of lights. On Christmas Day, Santa show off his downhill skills at the three area ski resorts. 403/762-8421.
