Getting Here and Around

Banff National Park, in west-central Alberta, is located 128 km (80 mi) west of Calgary, 401 km (249 mi) southwest of Edmonton, and 850 km (528 mi) east of Vancouver. The closest international airports are in Calgary and Edmonton. Major airlines serve both airports.

A car allows the most flexible travel in the Canadian Rockies, and the easiest way to get from Calgary to Banff is by car on the Trans-Canada Highway 1. Use Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) to get from Jasper to Banff. International car rental agencies are available at Edmonton and Calgary airports and in Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper.

For travel within the towns of Banff and Lake Louise, there is a public transit system as well as several local taxi companies to choose from. Public buses also run between Banff and Lake Louise, and in the winter there is a ski shuttle service that picks up at most area hotels and transports guests to the park's three ski resorts.

Roam Banff Public Transit. These hybrid electric buses take you most anywhere you'd want to go in Banff Townsite, including Banff Upper Hot Springs, Banff Gondola, Banff Centre, and Tunnel Mountain. One-way fares cost C$2. Banff, AB. 403/762-6770. banff.ca/roam.
