Banff and the Canadian Rockies Hotel Reviews
The lodgings in Banff compose an eclectic list that includes backcountry lodges without electricity or running water, campgrounds, hostels with shared bathroom facilities, standard roadside motels, quaint B&B's, supremely luxurious hotels, and historic mountain resorts. Most accommodations do not provide meal plans, but some include breakfast.
With just a few exceptions, room rates are often highest from mid-June to late September and between Christmas and New Year's. In many cases, the best accommodation rates can be found during the months of October to mid-November and May to mid-June when rates can drop by as much as 50%. Lodgings in this chapter are listed with their peak-season rates. Check in advance for off-season rates.
If you want to save money, consider staying in nearby Canmore and in Kananaskis Country.
About the Campgrounds
Parks Canada operates 13 campgrounds in Banff National Park (not including backcountry sites for backpackers and climbers). The camping season generally runs from mid-May through October, although the Tunnel Mountain and Lake Louise campgrounds remain open year-round. Hookups are available at most of the campgrounds and at 4 of the 31 Kananaskis Country campgrounds. Prices for a one-night stay range from C$9 to C$33. A fire permit is required to use a fire pit. In some cases the permit is purchased separately and in others it's included in the rates. Banff and Lake Louise participate in a reservation system that allows visitors to prebook campsites at Tunnel Mountain and Lake Louise campgrounds for a fee of C$11. The other campgrounds in the park operate on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve a campsite, visit: www.pc.gc.ca or call 905/426-4648 or 877/737-3783. For backcountry camping in Banff or Lake Louise, call Lake Louise Backcountry Trails Office at 403/522-1264. Numerous privately run campgrounds can be found outside park boundaries.
