Winter Sports
Whether you're driving a dogsled across a frozen lake, ice climbing, snowshoeing, skiing at one of the world's top mountain ski resorts, or simply taking in the northern lights, there's no shortage of winter activities to choose from.
Cross-Country Skiing
Downhill Skiing
Some of the world's best downhill skiing is found in the Banff area. If you want to try each of the three major hills, a good bargain is the tri-area ski pass from Ski Banff/Lake Louise Sunshine which allows you to ski at Sunshine Village, Ski Norquay, and Lake Louise. It includes free shuttle service to the slopes. Rates start at $231 for three days and you can purchase the pass at the ski areas or at many shops in Banff. 403/762-4561 www.skibig3.com.
Lake Louise Mountain Resort. The downhill terrain is large and varied, with a fairly even spread of novice, intermediate, and expert runs spread across three mountains and north-facing back bowls. The vertical drop is 3,257 feet, there are 105 runs, 11 lifts, and a terrain park. Off Lake Louise Dr., Lake Louise. 403/522-3555. www.skilouise.com.
Ski Norquay. Just minutes from Banfff, Norquay has been popular with families since it opened in 1926. In addition to a wide variety of runs for all abilities, Norquay has the only night skiing in the bow valley and the only lit terrain park. Off the Mt. Norquay access road, Banff. 403/762-4421. www.banffnorquay.com.
Sunshine Village. Five miles (8 km) west of the town of Banff, the terrain offers options for all levels of skiers. The vertical drop is 3,514 feet, and there are 103 trails and 12 lifts. Off Hwy. 1, Banff. 403/762-6500 or 877/542-2633. www.skibanff.com.

Skis and snowboards can be rented on the slopes or at many shops in town, concentrated along Bear Street and Banff Avenue.
