Greenlake Guesthouse

$-$$, Green Lake

Fodor's Review:

With the demise of the Chelsea Station in Fremont, the Greenlake Guesthouse is the lone representative of the residential neighborhoods north of the canal and west of the University District. Thankfully, it's outstanding in every way. The house (which actually feels like a house instead of a museum) is directly across the street from the eastern shore of beautiful Green Lake. The romantic Parkview Suite is the pièce de résistance, with a full view of the park, and pale green walls that play off the green of the leaves just outside the windows. The Cascade has a very limited view of the lake, but it has funky red walls and a gas fireplace to make up for it. All rooms have private baths with jetted tubs and heated tile floors. Owners Blayne and Julie McAfterty have put a lot of thought into everything: a public computer with Internet is available in the living room. A communal minibar in the hall dispenses complimentary sodas and water. Bookshelves in the upstairs hallway have an extensive DVD collection of Oscar-winning Best Pictures (along with a few guilty-pleasure action movies and some kids' favorites). To keep things interesting, the full breakfast alternates between savory (an omelet for example) and sweet (such as French toast with fresh seasonal fruit).
