Fodor's Review:
One of the state's oldest wineries is 15 mi northeast of Seattle on 87 wooded acres. Once part of the estate of lumber baron Fred Stimson, it includes the original trout ponds, a carriage house, a caretaker's cottage, formal gardens, and the 1912 family manor house (which is on the National Register of Historic Places). Complimentary wine tastings and cellar tours run throughout the day. Reservations are required for private tours, one week in advance. You're also invited to picnic and explore the grounds on your own; the wineshop sells delicatessen items. In summer Chateau Ste. Michelle hosts nationally known performers and arts events in its amphitheater.
