$$$, Pacific Northwest, Downtown
Fodor's Review:
Don't expect to be overwhelmed by wacky design elements or mystified by culinary acrobatics. Do expect to be filled with an inexplicable feeling of well-being when you look back on your meal weeks or even months later. Dining at Union is a special experience, but everything about the place is so understated, the experience may take a while to process. Though from the street the restaurant looks very sleek and a little standoffish (yes, there are an awful lot of red and gray accents), the space becomes very cozy once you settle in; everyone seems like they're either regulars or want to be regulars, and you'll be free to relax here and savor every bite. Fresh ingredients come from Pike Place Market and the menu changes daily to accommodate what's available. Seafood is the strong point -- no one cooks a scallop better than Union -- but selections always include some type of pork dish, as well as fowl. Entrées are outstanding and reasonably priced, but you might opt to concoct a meal out of starters, which are more fun and inventive. The Dungeness crab salad with avocado and basil oil is always on the menu and it's a must. The wine list is excellent and servers are great at giving advice on which bottle to select.
