Alki Beach

Beaches, West Seattle

Fodor's Review:

In summer, cars inch along Alki Avenue, seeking a coveted parking space, all the passengers heading for this 2 1/2-mi stretch of sand that has views of both the Seattle skyline and the Olympic Mountains. It's something of a California beach scene (except for the water temperature), with in-line skaters, joggers, and cyclists sharing the walkway and sun-loving singles playing volleyball and flirting. Year-round, families come to build sand castles, beachcomb, and fly kites; in winter, storm-watchers come to see the crashing waves. Facilities include drinking water, grills, picnic tables, phones, and restrooms; restaurants line the street across from the beach. To get here from Downtown, take either I-5 south or Highway 99 south to the West Seattle Bridge and exit onto Harbor Avenue Southwest, turning right at the stoplight.
