Hunting Island State Park

Parks, Beaufort

User Rating: ***** 4.8

Fodor's Review:

Secluded Hunting Island State Park has nature trails and about 3 mi of public beaches -- some dramatically and beautifully eroding. The 1,120-foot-long fishing pier is among the longest on the East Coast. You can climb the 181 steps of the Hunting Island Lighthouse (built in 1859 and abandoned in 1933) for sweeping views. The nature center has exhibits, an aquarium, and lots of turtles. A stroll along the marsh boardwalk is to be at one with nature. The park is 18 mi southeast of Beaufort via U.S. 21; call for cabin and camping reservations.

Where we're spending our next summer vacation

Posted by Terri from East Bay, California on 9/28/05

I stumbled upon the Hunting Island park while staying in Beaufort at the Rhett Inn (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!) I spent a lovely afternoon on the beach, tidepooling, collecting shells, swimming in the delicious warm water and marveling at the very clean, natural beach. I didn't bring my son on this trip and I missed him every minute I was there. He'd LOVE this place! It's the right balance of natural (we even saw a buck, a doe and a fawn on the way out of the park) and close enough to civilization to keep everyone happy. Can't wait to go back!
