Interstate 95, which cuts diagonally across the state, is the fastest route to Providence from Boston, coastal Connecticut, and New York City. Interstate 195 southeast from Providence leads to New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Cape Cod. Route 146 northwest from Providence leads to Worcester and Interstate 90, passing through the northeastern portion of the Blackstone Valley. U.S. 1 follows much of the Rhode Island coast east from Connecticut before turning north to Providence. Route 138 heads east from Route 1 to Jamestown, Newport, and Portsmouth, in easternmost Rhode Island.

The speed limit on interstate highways varies from 55 mph to 65 mph; state routes vary, with 55 mph the top speed. Right turns are permitted on red lights after stopping, except in downtown Providence.
