It should come as no surprise that a place nicknamed the Ocean State would attract boaters. Colonial Newport prospered from shipbuilding and trading, and even today boating is the city's second-largest industry after tourism. Point Judith Pond, close to deep Atlantic waters, harbors New England's second-largest commercial fishing fleet (behind that of New Bedford, Massachusetts) and nearly four dozen sportfishing charter boats. Block Island's Great Salt Pond is New England's busiest summertime harbor, hosting more than 1,700 boats on weekends.
