African American Museum in Philadelphia

Museums / Galleries, Old City

Fodor's Review:

Permanent and changing exhibits are dedicated to the history, fine art, artifacts, crafts, and culture of African-Americans in the United States. Past exhibitions have showcased African-American female sculptors, slavery artifacts, and sports in Philadelphia. The museum's gift shop stocks the area's widest selection of books on black culture, history, fiction, poetry, and drama, along with African textiles and sculpture and African-American jewelry, prints, and tiles. Opened in the Bicentennial year of 1976, this is the first museum of its kind funded and built by a city.
