Long considered one of Society Hill's poorer neighbors and known as a melting pot for immigrants, Old City, north of the Historic Area, is associated with three historic monuments: Christ Church, Elfreth's Alley, and the Betsy Ross House. Today the area is also known for its chic art galleries, cafés, and restaurants, and its rehabbed houses and residential lofts. The presence of theater and dance companies, art workshops, and design firms adds to the neighborhood's renewed vitality as a cultural, shopping, and dining district.
