Fodor's Review:

You'll feel like you're checking into the Pantheon when you enter this neoclassical hotel set in a century-old bank building. More than 60,000 square feet of Georgian white marble are sparsely decorated with palms, classical statues, and well-chosen antiques. Ionic columns ascending the height of nine stories dwarf the lobby lounge, and natural light cascades through the oculus of the 140-foot dome ceiling. Guest rooms done in a warm caramel-and-brown color scheme are less grandiose -- and surprisingly small -- but have modern touches like flat-screen televisions. The executive rooms, on the top four floors, feature upgraded amenities, a dedicated concierge, and complimentary food in the hand-carved, walnut-panel Ritz-Carlton Club, which has breathtaking views of the north, east, and south sides of the city.

Unimpressive for Price

The lobby is great. But you don't sleep in the lobby. The rooms were small but very modern. I stayed here for 4 days and the room upkeep was very good. However, I had a leaky iron which stained one of my shirts with its rusty water. I called for a new iron and it took 45 minutes for someone to come up. The business center was also closed which meant I had to pay $10 for one day of internet. When I logged on, the internet worked 50% of the time and no one at the front desk had an answer for its slowness. The service was extremely friendly and helpful if you talked to someone face to face. Over the phone though, it bordered on rude. (When I told the front desk that the iron leaked rusty water and stained my shirt and asked if they had a new one, the answer was, and i quote, "another one is on the way sir." That was it. No apology.) My complaints may seem petty, but when you shell out big bucks and you're at the ritz, you don't expect any problems. We payed 5-star money for 3 star service. So to that end, I have to say I was somewhat disappointed. My wife is upset that she missed the chocolate buffet on Thirsday night. She asked that I give everyone a heads up. That is all.

A lovely hotel!!

We stayed here last weekend through a Philadelphia promotion that gives you a better rate for 2 nights. We paid $419 for 2 nights for a deluxe room ( king bed) but were upgraded to a superior room ( queen bed with sitting room and bathtub ). The room was not large but spacious enough and the sitting room had a nice sofa and side chair. Both rooms had flat screen tv's hung on the wall. The decor was very nice and very clean. The bed was very comfortable with beautiful bedding. The bathroom was all marble and the only negative is that there is only room for a stand alone sink not a vanity top so I had to dry my hair in the bedroom while my husband got ready. Not a big deal at all! The service was phenomenal from the concierge to the front desk staff to the room service ( arrived quickly and very nice! ). I would suggest asking for a room on a high floor because we could hear some street noise.

Not so Ritzy

Posted by travelers123 from San Francisco on 1/8/07

I stayed there last week over the holidays with my family. The Lobby was nice. The service was not. The bathrooms were not done. One day I returned to an undone room. The maid had not completed the room. The waiters at the grill were not knowlegeable about afternoon tea. The rooms were tiny and unkept. The furniture was mediocre and damaged. I would not stay there again. I will just go in to see the lobby, the only thing going for it. Not ritzy at all
