The American Ballet Theatre (ABT) is renowned for its gorgeous renditions of the 19th-century classics (Swan Lake, Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty, and La Bayardère) as well as its modern repertoire, including works by such 20th-century masters as George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and Agnes de Mille. Since its founding in 1940, the company has nurtured a stellar array of dancers, including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Natalia Makarova, Rudolf Nureyev, Gelsey Kirkland, and Cynthia Gregory. The ballet has two New York seasons -- eight weeks beginning in May at its home in the Metropolitan Opera House and two weeks in fall (usually October) at City Center.
