Mercer Hotel

$$$, SoHo

User Rating: **** 3.7

Fodor's Review:

Owner Andre Balazs, known for his Chateau Marmont in Hollywood, has a knack for channeling a neighborhood sensibility. Here, it's SoHo loft all the way. In the hushed lobby, the reception desk is unmarked. Guest rooms are generously sized with long entryways, high ceilings, and walk-in closets. Dark African woods and custom-designed furniture upholstered in muted solids lend serenity. Some bathrooms feature decadent two-person marble tubs surrounded by mirrors. Downstairs is the happening Mercer Kitchen. The lowest-price rooms here are a slightly snug 250 square feet. For grander spaces, expect much higher prices.

First Class Hotel; Third Class Service

Posted by Affable from Beverly Hills, CA on 4/6/08

I encountered a rude hotel employee. When I complained, her supervisor stood by her. So I complained to the hotel's general manager. He didn't believe me, writing (he also didn't bother facing me) that the employee has had no other complaints. What is this? I didn't pay nearly $700 a night to be treated rudely by one person and then have her supervisors defend her. The Mercer Hotel offers a great location and a very nice facility -- that is if you don't mind being treated poorly.

Soho's Best

Posted by Roberto from CA on 11/11/05

The best of the city's boutique hotels. Killer rooms: spacious (get the Loft Suite; you're already shelling out so you might as well go for one of the best rooms in NYC) and authentic to Soho. Desk staff are clad in pastel cableknit sweaters rather than the all-black cooler-than-thou of the other hotels; though they have probably been in the city for less than six months just like the Sprockets characters at the other boutique hotels, they don't act like it and are pleasantly down to earth (Russell Crowe should have hucked the phone at someone at the Soho Grand, not the Mercer). Have stayed at them all -- 60 Thompson, Soho Grand & Tribeca Grand -- and the Mercer is superior & worth the price.
