Museums / Galleries, Midtown East
Fodor's Review:
On view from the street is the chic, bazaarlike gift store, but downstairs are the elegant galleries filled with Orientalist and classicist works of 19th-century and early-20th-century European academic art. The vivid paintings idealize the human figure and are usually of historical, mythological, or religious subjects. The evolving collection features mostly French and British artists, including works by such painters as Bonheur, Bouguereau, and Gérôme, and sculptor Barye. The pricey Opaline café on the second floor has a great view over the avenue.
