Charlie Palmer Steak

$$-$$$$, Steak, South Strip

User Rating: *** 3.0

Fodor's Review:

The whole idea of putting a Four Seasons hotel inside Mandalay Bay was to have a quiet enclave "hidden" within a busy hotel-casino complex. Charlie Palmer got the idea right away. Although his Aureole at Mandalay Bay can be something of a scene, the nearby steak house is easygoing and understated -- it's also a comparative bargain in a city of ultra-pricey steak joints. The mahogany-panel room off the Four Seasons lobby serves only Black Angus that's been dry-aged for 21 days. There's commendable seafood, too, such as oven-roasted day-boat halibut and stuffed Maine lobster. Among the several first-rate desserts, try the warm banana bundt cake absolutely swimming in butterscotch sauce and topped with vanilla ice cream and caramelized bananas. The lounge welcomes the revival of the cigar and presents live entertainment on weekends.

Not a Good Experience

Posted by James from Michigan on 11/5/06

I was in Vegas on a business trip and made arrangements to invite by brother and sister-in-law for what I believed to be a quality place for dinner. As noted on a number of other posts, the service was poor. After waiting over an hour for seating despite arriving well on time, we noticed quite a few folks slip the maitre'd a $20 to get in ahead. Sorry, I won't do that if I've reserved. After being seated and waiting a good twenty minutes before a server showed to take drink orders, we discovered that the food was as uninspiring as the service. All of us ordered steaks and were suprised to taste meat tenderizer in these allegedly expensive cuts of beef. Our suspicions were later confirmed as the common side-effect of tenderizer later appeared and we all ended up scrambling for Immodium later. Appetizers and veggies were okay, but nothing we couldn't have gotten at a $10 buffet. My sister-in-law had these cheesy potatoes that she swears had Velveeta as a principal ingredient. Desserts were a little better, but I have seen better for these prices. Atmosphere showed a lot of creativity and attention was obviouly spent on the layout. Nonetheless, you can't eat the atmosphere. For a far better steakhouse, I'd recommend going north and crossing the street to hit Craftsteak.
