Monte Carlo Resort and Casino

$-$$$$, South Strip

User Rating: ** 2.3

Fodor's Review:

The Strip could use more places like this: it's handsome but not ostentatious, and they haven't skimped on the rooms, which are outfitted with elegant cherrywood furnishings. If you have kids, it's a good alternative to Excalibur: family-friendly perks include a kiddie pool and a mini-"water park." There's a decent selection of restaurants (among them, Andre's) and the casino is so orderly you can follow a carpeted "road" from one end to the other. The pool was handsomely renovated in 2006.

Not bad - minor issues

Posted by yeoldegal from maricopa, ca on 7/28/07

Not being one to worry to much about the sound a toilet makes when flushing, just that it does!! the bathrooms were good sized - how much make-up do those broads carry, anyway? - that said - yeah, that beep, beep, beep, was an issue for my guy, so he called the front desk, and without question they changed our room to the strip side, and the noise level was really reduced. the first room had more channels on the t.v. (?) don't know why, but was not a big deal. lost money on slots ($75.00) and unlike on t.v. the casino wouldn't give it back! huh! go figure!! not a lot of hot bikini babes for my guy to examine at poolside, like on t.v. (we watch too much t.v., anyway)-the river pool was really cool - you just float along - different from a jacuzzi as the water flows over your body - nice!!!didn't come for rooms, but oh, those pillow tops, yea!! our rooms was nice and clean, the staff were accomadating - price was right - got a couple of perk coupons - not bad - only thing - they had shut off our key cards by 9:30am on check out day - if we'd have left the room together we'd of been screwed - all in all, would we book it again?? sure, why not, except vegas is a buffet of hotels - try 'em all - would i avoid this hotel? - no

Construction next door through 2010

Posted by ScottyMac33 from New York City on 1/13/07

Was here for the CES show and was surprised to have my cabbie from the airport tell me that I'd be lucky to get any sleep during my stay. Turns out that he wasn't entirely correct, but was onto something. There is a huge construction site next door where they are building a number of mega-properties and one of the mornings I was awakened at 6:00AM to the pounding at the construction site. This is not exactly what I had in mind. The casino itself was relatively empty, and I'm wondering if that was an indication of a much less than capacity resort. I would stay away from this one unless you remember to bring along your ear plugs - if you don't mind the construction you can probably gain a pretty good deal.

Beware 24 hour construction project next door

Posted by Dryheat from Phoenix on 11/22/06

When we booked our room, we were not warned that there is a 24-hour construction project underway next door that causes terrible noise in many of the rooms. The project us being done by the same company that owns the Monte Carlo, which tells you something about the concern they have for the comfort of their guests. We had three different rooms in three nights, and on the third night they tried to put us in another room right next to the construction. Except for one person, the staff was unapologetic and didn't compensate us for these problems. Stay away!

Disappointed with the Monte Carlo

Posted by Jennifer from Flushing, NY on 10/24/06

I stayed at the Monte Carlo October 16-21, 2006 and would NOT recommend it. There is a massive construction project going on in between this hotel and the Bellagio called City Center, which will not be finished until 2009. The construction goes on 6 days a week, 24 hours a day so you'll hear the sound of trucks backing up (beep, beep, beep) and pile drivers day and night. If you do stay here, ask for a room away from the construction. The noise will be masked a bit, but I would recommend earplugs if you plan on sleeping because if you think the noise outside the hotel is bad, the noise on the inside is just as bad or even worse. Construction - The construction has closed half of the pool area and the remaining half is in the shade until late afternoon. The free tram that runs between the Monte Carlo and the Bellagio is closed due to the construction. I got stuck in traffic (trucks blocking the road) on the way back to the airport so a 10 minute ride that cost $14 turned into a 25 minute ride costing $24. Hotel Rooms - You can hear the showers in the rooms on either side of you loudly through the walls. When you flush the toilet, it makes a very loud noise (boom!) When the person in the room next to you puts their key in their door and opens it, it sounds like they are coming into your room. The shower has no bar or rack to hang a washcloth or hold onto. My 80 year old mother had to put a towel on the floor of the tub to give her better traction because there was no bar to hold onto to steady herself. I'm an easygoing person used to the basic amenities. I have stayed at the MGM Grand and Treasure Island on previous visits with no complaints. Fodors should return to the Monte Carlo to review it again. If so, I'm confident they won't make it one of their best choices.

Plain Jane

Posted by Gerri from Kansas City, MO on 1/2/06

We spent Xmas 2005 at Monte Carlo. This was our fourth trip to Vegas and first stay at Monte Carlo. I was very disappointed in our room. The room was small. The upholstered furniture was soiled. No full length mirror. Short vainity area - no enough room to do make-up. Shower hardware lacked tension. It was supposed to be adjustable but instead it just hung downward or shot all the way to the ceiling. As a result at 5'4", I had to duck to wash hair. My husband is 6', so this was also akward for him. Wall paper in bath was curled up around the shower because of the out of control shower head. The pay-on-demand movie system did not work with remote. It was four days into stay before I realized there were more movies available by manually changing the channel. Room was overall BORING - no class or flash. At first I thought this suits the business traveler but when my husband had a conference call in room, he could not use room phone because it was bedside and would not reach to the desk where his papers were laid out. Room service was outrageous in costs. Two appetizers and 2 desserts were over $50. Plus they forgot to deliver one of the desserts. The buffet in the hotel did not have much to offer. Comp program was OK. Dragon Noodle was good and Prince Tribute show at Pub was very good.
