Fodor's Review:

Rooms are large, opulent, and modern, with some unusual amenities for Las Vegas -- such as beds with ultrafirm mattresses, duvets, coffeemakers, and Davies Gate bath products -- and most provide a good view of the city. The incredible, sleek pool, completely redone in 2006, is surrounded by cabanas with TVs and hammocks, patches of grass and sand, three bars, and a concert venue. The Fantasy Tower that opened in 2006 added another 225 rooms and two "Party Floors" that include a suite with a hardwood basketball court and a nearby recording studio for bands or pop stars who want to mix business with pleasure.

The Casino. The Palms opened with a bold plan to be two casinos in one. By day it's a locals' casino on the west end (the one near the food court, sports book, and movie theaters). Come nighttime, there's a hip casino that serves as serious competition for the Hard Rock Hotel (thanks to the nightclubs on the east end of the property). That duality is still evident, though the influence of the hip side is clearly taking over. Retirees at the slots coexist with young suits wearing cell-phone headsets, eyeing cocktail waitresses in shiny black vinyl high-heeled boots and short-short skirts.

The Palms is clean and well ventilated, with slot sections sprinkled comfortably along its wood floors, low lighting, and giant fans that hang low from the ceiling and pass the time in a slow, easy spin. The collective effect is a nice flow from the tattoo joint at one end to the food court at the other. The Palms does take big bets but the table-game rules are average. The slots and video-poker machines, however, are hands down the best among any of the featured casinos in this chapter; you have to venture far from the Strip to far less sexy gambling halls to find coin games that compete. Look for swim-up blackjack, which is played in the poolside lounge. Or, head upstairs to gamble in the Playboy Club, which offers blackjack tables in a retro-cool setting with crystal chandeliers and bunny-eared dealers.

Good value

Rooms are above average, very speedy elevators, nice view from rooms, and access to strip, although not walkable, is easier to get around by cab since you won't be stuck in Las Vegas Blvd traffic upon leaving. Vibe is an odd mix of fake Playboy mansion to grab the 20 something dudes (24 hour tattoo parlor is a bit silly), and older locals there for discount casino, which is relatively small for Vegas... although strong selection of movies in theaters down stairs. Not a good gambling location, good for most else. Expect fair amount of "I love Vegas" being yelled in hallways as the 20 somethings come home 2-4 am, and don't be surprised to see an unusual amount of suspiciously overly buxom "patrons" playing slots nearest to the entryway after midnight. Otherwise for the money I found rooms to be exceptional and would stay there again.
