The stately, neoclassic 1844 Association Hall houses the town hall and the Katharine Cornell Memorial Theatre, created in part with funds that Cornell (1898-1974) -- one of America's foremost stage actresses in the 1920s, '30s, and '40s and a longtime summer resident -- donated in her will. The walls of the theater on the 2nd floor are painted with murals depicting whaling expeditions and a Native American gathering, and the ceiling resembles a blue sky with seagulls overhead. Island artist Stan Murphy painted the murals on the occasion of the town's tercentenary in 1971. The theater occasionally holds performances of plays, concerts, and dances.
