Set behind hedges and a wide lawn, this B&B is a short walk from the village center. The 1699 inn has preserved its antique wide-board floors and has open-hearth fireplaces (one with a beehive oven) in the living room, the dining room, and the keeping room. The rooms are toasty, too -- all but one have working fireplaces, and the suites have whirlpool tubs. Antique and country furnishings, Oriental rugs, and glimmers of brass and crystal create an elegant feel. Breakfast is served on the backyard terrace or in the formal dining room. Pros: Less than 1 mi to restaurants and shops of Barnstable Village, spacious, authentically decorated rooms, working fireplaces for cooler nights, in-room spa treatments available. Cons: Rooms are on 2nd floor, accessed via very steep stairs.
