Truro

The Highland Golf Links (Lighthouse Rd., North Truro. 508/487-9201), a 9-hole, par-36 course on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic and Highland Light, is unique for its resemblance to Scottish links.

Wellfleet

Chequessett Yacht Country Club (680 Chequessett Neck Rd., west of Downtown Wellfleet. 508/349-3704) is a semiprivate club (public use on space-available basis) with a 9-hole golf course and five hard-surface tennis courts by the bay. Lessons are available.

Chatham

Chatham Seaside Links (Seaview St., West Chatham. 508/945-4774), a 9-hole course, is good for beginners.

Harwich

Cranberry Valley Golf Course (183 Oak St. 508/430-5234. www.cranberrygolfcourse.com) has a championship layout of 18 well-groomed holes surrounded by cranberry bogs.

Harwich Port Golf Club (South and Forest Sts., Harwich Port. 508/432-0250) has a 9-hole course that's great for beginners.

Brewster

The Captain's Golf Course (1000 Freeman's Way, east of Rte. 6. 508/896-1716 or 877/843-9081) is an excellent public facility with two fine 18-hole courses -- Golf Digest has named it one of the leading public courses in the nation.

Ocean Edge Golf Course (Villages Dr., off Rte. 6A, East Brewster. 508/896-5911), an 18-hole, par-72 course winding around five ponds, has Scottish-style pot bunkers and challenging terrain. Three-day residential and commuter golf schools are offered in spring and early summer.

Yarmouth

Blue Rock Golf Course (Off Great Western Rd., South Yarmouth. 508/398-9295) is a highly regarded, easy-to-walk 18-hole, par-3, 3,000-yard public course crossed by a pond. The pro shop rents clubs; reservations are mandatory in season.

Barnstable

Four Points by Sheraton Hyannis Resort (Scudder La., West End rotary, Hyannis. 508/775-7775) has a beautifully landscaped, challenging 18-hole par-3 course called Twin Brooks; it's open to nonguests. You may bump into some famous faces; many performers from the Cape Cod Melody Tent tee off here while they're in town.

Mashpee

The Country Club at New Seabury (Shore Dr., New Seabury. 508/477-9111) has a superior 18-hole, par-72 championship layout on the water as well as an 18-hole, par-70 course. Both are open to the public October through May, depending on availability; reservations two days in advance are recommended, and proper attire is required.

Sandwich

Sandwich Hollows Golf Club (1 Round Hill Rd., East Sandwich. 508/888-3384. www.sandwichhollows.com) has an 18-hole, par-71 course that's open to the public.
