This 1790s Georgian mansion sits along a peaceful stretch of scenic Main Street and was once the home of writer Horatio Alger. The sun-filled rooms are unfussy but elegant, with Oriental rugs, wide-plank floors, original woodwork, and tall windows with the original wavy glass. Several have working fireplaces, and two particularly cozy units -- the Seabreeze and Treetops rooms -- have pitched ceilings and access to a deck overlooking the leafy grounds and fragrant gardens. The Seacroft Suite has French doors leading to a large sitting area. Gracious innkeepers Stuart and Charlotte Fyfe serve a delicious full breakfast out by the garden in summer and in a cozy dining room during the cooler months. Pros: In the heart of historic Brewster village, authentic historic lodging, spacious gardens and grounds. Cons: Many rooms accessed via steep stairs, some rooms are on the smaller size due to the home's age.
