Ampersand Guesthouse

Fodor's Review:

Helpful, low-key owners Robert Vetrick and Ken Janson (the latter an architect) run this peaceful West End inn that feels far from the din of Commercial Street but is actually just a short walk away. This natty mid-19th-century Greek-revival guesthouse contains nine eclectically furnished rooms, many with high-pitched ceilings, fireplaces, and tall windows -- furnishings tend toward simple, understated, and elegant. For more seclusion, book the studio apartment in the neighboring carriage house, which also has a kitchen. Guests relax in the leafy yard with pretty gardens, or out on the sundeck on the 2nd floor, with views of the harbor a couple of blocks away. Robert bakes fresh muffins each morning as part of the continental breakfast, which is served before a fireplace on cooler days. Pros: Peaceful and charming West End location, stylish and well-chosen decor, great value. Cons: Have to walk a bit to reach East End businesses, some rooms smallish.
