Brooks Academy Museum

Museums / Galleries, Harwich

Fodor's Review:

Once the home of a private-school offering the first high school-level curriculum in Harwich, the pillared 1844 Greek-revival building of the Brooks Academy Museum now houses the museum of the Harwich Historical Society. In addition to a large photo-history collection and exhibits on artist Charles Cahoon (grandson of cranberry grower Alvin), the sociotechnological history of cranberry culture, and shoe making, the museum has antique clothing and textiles, china and glass, fans, and toys. There's also an extensive genealogical collection for researchers. On the grounds is a powder house used to store gunpowder during the Revolutionary War, as well as a restored 1872 outhouse that could spur your appreciation for indoor plumbing.
