Taj Boston Hotel

Fodor's Review:

Formerly the Ritz-Carlton Boston (not to be confused with the Ritz-Carlton Boston Common), this landmark hotel is now owned by Taj Hotels. Standing guard at the corner of fashionable Newbury Street and the Public Garden, it has long been a symbol of gracious opulence. So far, the cobalt-blue-and-crystal chandeliers, lavish fabrics, and gilded sconces remain, as do many of the former Ritz's staff members. Small changes include plush new robes and towels in guest rooms, and Molton Brown bath amenities instead of Bulgari. The Taj has added vibrant floral displays in the lobby, and offers three meals daily in The Café, plus high tea in the Lounge. It's too soon to predict any major changes but, for now, if you liked the old Ritz -- with its cozy luxury, wood-burning fireplaces (and fireplace butlers), afternoon tea (with a harpist), and glorious views -- you'll be as happy as one of the swans in the Public Garden's lagoon at the "new" Taj.

Staff let down by management

Posted by StephenC from London, England on 9/29/07

I had a terrible stay here in 2006 and moved out after 1 night to the Four Seasons. On arrival at 7 p.m. I was told my room was not ready, and would not have the king sized bed my internet reservation "guaranteed". The reception staff tried to help but said they had no way to get housekeeping to prioritise cleaning a room for me and it wasn't until 8 p.m. a room was found. I'd booked the top class of room but got a small grubby place with a cracked toilet overlooking an air conditioning vent. Trust me, the Four Seasons is only 2 minutes away and is better in every way.

Elegant Accomodations

"My Pleasure!" Is the standard response to any inquiry made to a staff member of the Ritz. Ask for a room on an upper floor facing the Public Gardens and you will be rewarded with the best view of Boston. Seven stays at this property and I have never been disappointed. The only knock is that the bathrooms are quite small because this is an old building (although exquisitely renovated).
