$$-$$$$, West Maui
Fodor's Review:
The big news at Royal Lahaina Resort is the newly renovated 12-story, 333-room tower offering Hawaiian canoe-theme rooms with dark teak furnishings against light-colored walls. The new rooms boast ocean and garden views from half-moon balconies, plush "presidential" beds with 300-count Egyptian cotton linens, sound systems with an iPod and MP3 docking station, and 32-inch, high-definition flat-screen TVs. Visitors should be aware that renovations continue through 2008 with work on the hotel's trademark low-rise seaside cottages, on the grounds, and in the public areas. The project upgrades the property from midprice to deluxe/luxury status. Tennis buffs will be sorry to hear that the dozen tennis courts are going in favor of a new condominium complex; two upgraded courts will remain. Altogether, the aim is to return the resort to its glory days, when, as the first property in the resort, it hosted millionaires and Hollywood stars.
