Fodor's Review:

Denim-cover seating, decorative saddles, and a stagecoach in a loft helped to transform the historic Ako General Store in Waimea into a West Side steak house. You can eat under the stars on the deck out back or inside the old-fashioned, wood-panel dining room. The 16-ounce New York steak comes sizzling, and the rib eye is served with capers. Those with smaller appetites might consider the vegetable tempura or the ahi served on penne pasta. Local folks love the special lunch: soup, rice, beef teriyaki, and shrimp tempura served in a three-tier kaukau tin, or lunch pail, just like the ones sugar-plantation workers once carried. A gift shop has local crafts (and sometimes a craftsperson doing demonstrations).

Best meal of our trip

Posted by jellyroll from Los Angeles, CA on 8/31/07
We had great steaks at Wrangler's. Overall, we've found the food on Kaua'i to be woefully disappointing. We really didn't like Roy's in Poipu, Duane's Ono Char Burger was only okay, and everything is insanely expensive, particularly considering the quality. Wrangler's was tasty and relaxed, and it was a relief to not have to slog through macadamia passionfruit creme glaze to get to my meal. Simple and delicious, in a charming and relaxed surrounding. It's my one recommendation on the island so far.
