Fodor's Review:

In the 1980s Hanapepe was fast becoming a ghost town, its farm-based economy mirroring the decline of agriculture. Today it's a burgeoning art colony, with galleries, craft studios, and a lively art-theme street fair on Friday nights. The main street has a new vibrancy enhanced by the restoration of several historic buildings. The emergence of Kauai Coffee as a major West Side crop and expanded activities at Port Allen, now the main departure point for tour boats, also gave the town's economy a boost.

In decline again

Nov 07 - the town was closed. It was 11:00 am and one art shop was open and no place for lunch. It takes 2 minutes to drive off the highway and loop through the town, so in summer it may be alive!
