Named for Hawaii's famous Olympic swimming champion, Duke Kahanamoku, this is a hard-packed beach with the only shade trees on the sand in Waikiki. It's great for families with young children because of the shade and the calmest waters in Waikiki, thanks to a rock wall that creates a semiprotected cove. The ocean clarity here is not as brilliant as most of Waikiki because of the stillness of the surf, but it's a small price to pay for peace of mind about youngsters.

As Fodor's states, this is the beach in front of the Hilton Waikiki Village--that hotel is one of the major hubs for Japanese tourists, and they love to take a tour called "Atlantis" which is a submarine. This beach is the port for that and other boat tours. Twice I nearly got decapitated swimming in this beach because of careless ship and boat drivers zooming into the shore. Also, the beach has zero reef--so an absolute zero for snorkeling.
